Basic Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate a thorough understanding of Engineering Technology or Physics.  Engineering Interns (Electrical, Optical, or Mechanical Engineering, Physics) must be enrolled in an accredited degree program, and entering their sophomore year, as a minimum.

 

 

Desired capabilities include:

  • Familiarity with fiber optics communcations test equipment
  • Familiarity with high-speed transport, including SONET/SDH, GFP, and OTN, at rates up to 10 Gbps and higher (100G)
  • Direct experience with commercial multiplexing, routing, and switching hardware and routing protocols
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring metrics  
  • Familiarity with DWDM transport systems (metro, unrepeatered, or long-haul), and design and impairment analysis of such systems
  • Familiarity with coherent systems 

 

 

Candidates must be eligible for a TS/SCI with Polygraph clearance. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required. 

 

While this position does not require a US Government security clearance, the desire is that the candidates are willing to undergo the clearance process upon completion of a successful summer internship.  Therefore, the candidate must be willing to undergo a US Government / DoD special access clearance process.

 

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Photonics / Electro-optics / Telecommunications Engineering Intern. The position provides an opportunity to enhance the performance and profitability of an organization that supports some of our nation’s fundamental defense services.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.  You will work closely with experienced Electro-optics / Photonics Engineering Professionals to design, build and test custom communications hardware.  A solid technical background with a willingness to learn fiber optics and telecommunications test equipment is acceptable.  The professionals you will be working with are experts in their domain, previously designing commercial hardware for leaders in the telcom industry, such as Ciena and Cisco.
