Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree. Agile experience preferred.


Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is active at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Systems Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.



General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) is seeking cleared/clearable, bright, hardworking System Engineers to join the Tactical Control System (TCS) team at our headquarters in Fair Lakes (Fairfax) Virginia. The Tactical Control System (TCS) is a critical submarine system which integrates sensor inputs from Sonar, Radar, Periscope, Navigation, Communication, Electronic Support Measures, etc. TCS collects this data in order to provide a common operational picture and situational awareness display within a cyber secure environment. The TCS system is delivered to the US Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarines. It is installed in the Control Room and throughout the Submarine to assist the Commander, Officers, and Sailors on critical decision making. Specific Responsibilities

Responsibilities include deriving system and subsystem level requirements and working with a team to develop the corresponding design. Strength in documentation and management skills are a must.   This position will support Customer meetings and tasking. This includes leading weekly working groups with corresponding subsystems in order to brief the Customer on new capabilities and design during milestone reviews. Additional responsibilities include organization and management of the project’s Capability Items (CI), oversight and development of test procedures, and collaboration with the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) community. 


  • Participates in requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis, system design, trade studies, systems integration and test (verification), validation and interface definition studies of system elements direct supervision
  • Researches and analyzes data, such as vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE/BFE, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the system development life cycle
  • Develops and evaluates systems, networks and information systems to ensure designs meet applicable governmental security specifications
  • May provide system accreditation/certification evaluation and test support to ensure all technical security features (e.g., identification, authentication, access control, labeling, and auditing) of the system are considered and function properly
  • May develop system security documentation on both new and fielded information systems
  • Plans sub tasks for activities described above
  • Creative, innovative responsibilities requiring advanced decision-making skills
  • Defines processes for technical platforms, system specifications, input/output and working parameters for hardware and/or software compatibility
  • Developing professional expertise, applies company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
  • Identifies, analyzes and resolves system design weaknesses
  • Receives instructions from immediate supervisor
  • Contact with multiple work groups
  • Works under general supervision
  • Contact with Deputy Program Managers Engineering (DPME) and other professionals within the Engineering department
  • May have some contact outside Engineering or with external customers
  • Travel may be required 

Required Key Skills/Experience

  • Strong understanding of the Systems Engineering process
  • Ability to grasp and apply new information quickly and able to handle more complex assignments
  • Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office products (MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Word, MS SharePoint, MS Project)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Requirements Management database tool experience
  • Systems Engineering design within a team


Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Experience with IBM Rational DOORS or Telelogic DOORS
  • High proficiency with advanced Excel concepts including pivot tables and nested formulas
  • Proficiency in Excel Visual Basic for Applications (Excel-VBA) macro development
  • Proficiency in Visual Basic Scripting (VBScript)
  • Basic Linux command line navigation skills
  • Experience with Security Engineering
  • 1-2 Years of Experience on an Agile-Waterfall Hybrid Program
  • Experience with Navy Submarine Design
  • Experience with Combat Control System
  • Experience working with the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) Community
  • Active DOD Secret Clearance
